Our scripture this morning is Matthew 7:24-29.

“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.” When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority—quite unlike their teachers of religious law.

Jesus teaches heavenly concepts using earthly examples. The actuality might be more than we can grasp but Jesus gives illustrations that make sense to our human minds. Here He explains how important it is for us to have a “bedrock” of faith, grounding us firmly in God’s grace.

This lesson reminds us that relying on our own strength is foolish, that the first storm of evil will wash away our efforts. Trying to live our lives without a connection to Him is never successful. When we follow on the path where He leads, we have firm footing and the assurance that He has prepared a place for us.

In order to live as He intends we must study His word, gather with the faithful and go to share His love everywhere. Jesus wants the world to know Him through us! As His representatives we are sent to tell everyone the Good News.

Loving Lord, we are grateful for the blessing of Your forgiveness. Help us to be energetic workers for Your kingdom, that everyone may come to You. Amen.
