Our scripture this morning is 2 Timothy 2:14-16.

Remind them of these things, and solemnly exhort them in the presence of God not to dispute about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the listeners. Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a worker who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness.

Paul writes this letter to Timothy with guidance we can all use in our lives. He warns us “not to dispute about words”, that as disciples we must share our faith, “accurately handling the word of truth”. This is as important today as it was then.

We are called to present the scriptures as God intended, not making them fit our own agenda, but sharing His word honestly that all may come to know Him. We shouldn’t waste time on trivial issues but as Bishop Scott Jones used to say “we must keep the main thing the main thing”.

The world will always try to lead us away from our mission with “empty chatter”. Satan uses distraction and lies to keep us from accomplishing our Great Commission to make disciples of all the world (Matthew 28:19). We must remain steadfast in our commitment to Christ and the work He has given us.

Loving Lord, we are grateful to be called as Your workers, carrying the joy of salvation everywhere. Bless us to be strong in the face of opposition, loving all Your children and caring for them as You care for us. Amen.
