Our scripture this morning is 1 Thessalonians 5:12-14.

Dear brothers and sisters, honor those who are your leaders in the Lord’s work. They work hard among you and give you spiritual guidance. Show them great respect and wholehearted love because of their work. And live peacefully with each other. Brothers and sisters, we urge you to warn those who are lazy. Encourage those who are timid. Take tender care of those who are weak. Be patient with everyone.

Paul sends encouragement for the Thessalonians to “honor those who are your leaders in the Lord’s work”. While this points to pastors, there are many others involved in the life of the church. Take some time to consider and pray for those who keep your church moving forward in faith.

All of us have received spiritual gifts to be shared with the church and the world. While you may think you’re “along for the ride”, never doubt that God has a plan for your life, and will give you opportunities to share the joy we find in Him. Everyone has a chance to serve and bring the Good News!

Paul lists some tasks for us as members of the body of Christ: warn, encourage and take care of those around us. Finally he asks us to be patient with everyone. This is likely to be the most difficult calling we face in our fast-paced and sorely divided world. Rather than grumble about how hard life is and how thick-headed some may seem, we must remember we are all made in His image and no one is beyond His love.

Heavenly Father, we come to You in sorrow for our shortcomings, but with hope for the future. Bless us to be Your representatives, sharing Your word and Your love with everyone. Amen.
