Our scripture this morning is Matthew 6:25-26.
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
Jesus teaches lessons in a much different way than the scribes and Pharisees of that time. They taught about rules and punishments; Jesus speaks of our connection to God and one another. Yes, God has set standards for how we are to treat each other but people are the most important thing.
Jesus uses logic to show that since God bothered to create us, He will certainly sustain us – a greater to lesser comparison. Then He flips the argument from lesser to greater – if God cares for the birds, He surely cares for us. We can always count on God’s love and care.
This lesson is about trusting God and that life is more than our wants and needs. God made us in His image to be in a special relationship with Him. Nothing else in all of creation is as important as this.
Loving Lord, we are sorry for the times we have turned away from Your love. Forgive us and strengthen us to go in Your name to tell the world of Your love. Amen.
