Our scripture this morning is Matthew 6:19-21.

Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

Focusing on the wrong treasure can lead us astray. In this passage Jesus talks about our material possessions and the fact that eventually they will all be gone. Putting our trust in what awaits us in eternity is the way to salvation. He teaches us “wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be”, a warning that earthly things can be a trap if we become too attached to them. Jesus points us to using wealth wisely, for the good of others and the kingdom. Everything we have is a gift from God and we are commissioned to be good stewards of His property.

Heavenly Father, we are grateful for all Your many gifts, none more wonderful than Jesus our Savior. Help us to see that people are more important than things, and to use what we are given in service to all Your children. Amen.
