Our scripture this morning is Mark 4:39-40 (NLT).
When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
The Gospel of Mark shows us Jesus’ divine authority over demons, disease, death, and in this passage, nature. There are examples of His power along with parables to teach us the lessons we need to understand our relationship with God and each other. Above all we need to see Jesus as the reason for our hope and the rescue from sin we can’t accomplish on our own.
The disciples were still learning this and in a desperate situation they were afraid. We have the benefit of two thousand years of faith teaching and experience, but we still doubt. Often we turn to human things, thinking the answer must be more time or money or manpower.
Jesus asks us all “do you still have no faith?” and sadly it is a valid question, then and now. We know what Jesus can do but we still struggle through our issues, trusting our feeble knowledge and strength rather than relying on our faith. We have His presence with us and in us to calm and comfort us, all we need do is go to Him.
Loving Lord, we are sorry for the times we try to do it on our own, rather than accepting the love and forgiveness You offer. Help us to see our only way to You is through Your Son and send us to share this blessing with everyone. Amen.
