Our scripture this morning is Psalms 28:6-9.
Praise be to the Lord, for he has heard my cry for mercy. The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him. The Lord is the strength of his people, a fortress of salvation for his anointed one. Save your people and bless your inheritance; be their shepherd and carry them forever.
“The Lord is my strength and my shield”, what a profound statement of faith. It shows the connection between the psalmist and God, that even in trying times our hope is in Him. Our Father knows every situation we face, but when we cry to Him in prayer, we become part of the healing process.
This passage speaks of both individual and community faith, that God has chosen us for a purpose. It is up to us to accept the love and protection He offers through obedience to His law and authentic worship. The plea to “save Your people and bless Your inheritance” acknowledges His power and His reign over us all.
Seeing God as our shepherd is a way of understanding our fallen state, that we need His love and guidance in order to be saved. We can’t do it on our own. God stands ready to forgive us when we come in repentance, strengthening us for the kingdom work we are called to do.
Loving Lord, we are amazed that You chose us to help share Your word and Your love with the world. Bless us to be obedient and energetic in our mission. Amen.
